The Bowling Green State University Volleyball team traveled to Richmond, Virginia to take part in the VCU Invitational. The Falcons would come out of the weekend with one win and two losses after facing some very competitive competition. After arriving and checking into their hotel on Thursday Night the Falcons would have all-day to prepare for the host team the VCU Rams. The Falcons would end up coming into the game and capture an early lead vs the Rams in set number one. Although, after a timeout called by VCU it seemed to all go downhill for the Falcons against the Rams. The Falcons would fall against a very tough VCU team, a team that has improved since the Falcons faced the, last year at home. BG would fall three sets to none. In match number two the Falcons would come out and play Northwestern a little tougher in set number one, but eventually falling 25-21. Set number two was much like the first match against VCU in which the Falcons could not seem to find their identity as a team and would end up not finding any rhythm falling in set two by double digits. In set three it was a mixture of good and bad from the Falcon team. They showed flashes of brilliance while also reverting back to making errors and giving Northwestern free points. The Falcons would drop three sets to none in match number two as well. Match three was the best match of the Falcon all weekend. They found themselves in a battle with Seton Hall who had played Northwestern tough the day before and just came off a five set thriller against VCU in the match right before. The Falcons would find themselves down early and in a two to nothing hole after the first two sets. In set number three the Falcons came to play. They would take set three 25-17. In set four the Falcons found themselves up five and had two points till set point. The Pirates would make a come back and push the set to extra volleyball. The Falcons would rally to win 27-25 to force a fifth set. The Falcons then would carry that momentum into the fifth set and take the match with a fifth set score of 15-12 over Seton Hall. With this win it marked the 700th victory in program history. Additionally, on the weekend Kallie Seimet would set a program record for digs, while Madeline Brandewie would earn a spot on All-Tournament Team. On the weekend the Falcons finished with a 1-2 record and their overall record moves to 4-7. This weekend marked the last of non-conference play for the Falcons. They open up MAC play on the road at the defending MAC Champions Miami RedHawks on Thursday at 7 PM. History tends to repeat itself, and today was no exception when the Bowling Green State University Falcons took on the Michigan State Spartans and came away with a 35-10 loss. For the past three years the Falcons have opened up on the road versus a Power Five conference team, and the second straight year they did so against a Big Ten team. BGSU looked to come into today’s game with a different outcome than the two previous games. Last year, the Falcons took on Ohio State down in Columbus. Ohio State came away with a thundering 77-10 victory over BGSU. If you don’t remember though, the Falcons had the lead for a brief moment there, when a pass was intercepted and taken for six. Then Ohio State went out to put up 77 against the team, so the fun didn’t last very long. This year, the team held an advantage over the Spartans for one quarter of play. After a fumble was forced at the Bowling Green one-yard line, BGSU would then connect on a 45-yard pass from James Morgan to Datrin Guyton to set the Falcons up in field goal range. The Falcons held that 3-0 lead heading into the second quarter before a seven-yard run by Madre London of Michigan State put the Spartans up, 7-3. It would stay that way until Michigan State had a tremendous two-minute drill operation to end the first half when Brian Lewerke would find Felton Davis for a four-yard touchdown reception. If you are Bowling Green, you aren’t happy that you let up a touchdown that late in the quarter, but you are happy that it is still a close game. Then the third quarter hit and it seemed as though Michigan State had a plan and executed it, time in and time out. The Spartans would open up the third quarter with three straight touchdown drives to take full advantage of the game and put it out of reach for the Falcons. The game would stay 35-3 until LJ Scott of the Spartans fumbled for the second time, and this time it was scooped up and into the end zone by Cameron Jeffries. That would be BGSU’s only touchdown of the afternoon. Check out the rest of the article here: http://www.neosportsinsiders.com/bgsu-falls-michigan-state-35-10/ By: Ryan Strodtbeck
The Falcons took on the Fighting Irish of Notre Dame tonight at the Stroh Center in front of many BGSU faithful. The non-conference slate for the volleyball team has proven to be anything but easy and tonight was no exception. Coming into the match Notre Dame had a record of 4-0 and had only lost 3 sets the whole season. Coming out of a very good volleyball conference the Fighting Irish experience proved to be too much for the young Falcon team. The Fighting Irish dropped the Falcons in three straight sets to improve to 5-0 on the season while Bowling Green drops to 1-3. There were encouraging signs from the Falcons as they battled through and through with the tough Notre Dame team. Their efforts fell short but there is plenty of positives to take away from the game. In the first set, Bowling saw themselves get behind Notre Dame early but they battled back and ultimately got the set back to within three. Unfortunately, it was a little too late as Notre Dame took set one by a score of 25-21. The first set would be the closest the Falcons would get to Notre Dame on the night, in terms of ending set scores, but the team battled throughout. In the second set, Bowling Green seemed to get close, but every time they did Notre Dame would go on a run. Coach Tomic said after the game that one aspect they have to work on is eliminating teams getting on runs. The Falcons fell in the second set by a score of 25-19. Coming out of the locker room in the third set, it seemed like the Falcons were ready to once again battle with Notre Dame. With the first point ending after a long rally going to BG. The Falcons would take their biggest lead of the night in the third set but Notre Dame fought back and ended up winning the third set by a score of 25-17. On the night Junior Madeline Brandewie and sophomore Jessi Holly topped the Falcons offense with six kills each. Isabelle Marciniak had 27 assists on BG's 30 kills, she also added 8 digs, one service ace, and one block. The Falcons next game is tomorrow night at 7:00 PM at the Stroh Center. The game can be caught on FalconRadio which is on www.Bgrso.net. By Ryan VallonThe Bowling Green Radio Sports Organization's website got a new makeover.
